THESIS: On May 4, National Guardsmen shot four Kent State students and wounded nine others during a campus protest against the invasion of Cambodia. This peaceful protest was brought to a devastating end by the guardsmen, who infringed on the students’ First Amendment rights. Whoever gave the order to fire contradicted the American ideal of people standing up for their beliefs, an integral part of democracy.
